Also known as: 3Blue1BrownGrantSandersonMathVisualization

The math visualization YouTube channel that made calculus, linear algebra, and neural networks beautiful through animated explanations.

Essence of Calculus

Grant Sanderson (Stanford math major) launched 3Blue1Brown in March 2015, creating animated videos explaining mathematical concepts visually. His “Essence of Linear Algebra” and “Essence of Calculus” series became legendary—millions of students finally understood eigenvectors and derivatives after watching animated visualizations.

Manim Animation Library

Sanderson developed Manim (Mathematical Animation Engine) in Python to create his signature animations. The open-source library enabled other educators to make similar videos. 3Blue1Brown’s style—smooth camera movements, color-coded equations, and intuitive geometric representations—set new standards for math education.

Deep Dives and Passion

Unlike channels chasing views, 3Blue1Brown published monthly (or less), prioritizing depth over frequency. Videos on “Why is pi here?” or “Inverse matrices” ran 20-30 minutes with meticulous explanations. The channel proved math education could be beautiful, engaging, and rigorous simultaneously. By 2023, 6+ million subscribers made it the premiere math YouTube channel.
