Afrobeats (not to be confused with Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat) is a contemporary West African music genre blending highlife, hip-hop, dancehall, and electronic production. Led by Nigerian and Ghanaian artists like Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido, and Tiwa Savage, Afrobeats became a global phenomenon in the 2010s-2020s.

Global Breakthrough

Wizkid’s “Ojuelegba” (2014) and collaboration with Drake on “One Dance” (2016) introduced Afrobeats to international audiences. Burna Boy’s African Giant (2019) and Twice as Tall (2020) won Grammys, cementing Afrobeats’ mainstream appeal. Dancehall-influenced rhythms, pidgin English lyrics, and infectious percussion define the sound.

Streaming & TikTok Explosion

Afrobeats dominated Spotify, Apple Music, and TikTok, with songs like “Essence” by Wizkid & Tems (2020) and “Last Last” by Burna Boy (2022) becoming global hits. The genre’s danceability made it viral on social media, with millions creating dance challenges.

Cultural Pride

Afrobeats represents African diaspora pride, celebrating African culture and challenging Western music dominance. The genre’s success inspired collaborations with Beyoncé (The Lion King: The Gift), Ed Sheeran, and Justin Bieber.
