50km stretch of southern Italian coastline featuring cliffside villages, lemon groves, and Mediterranean views. UNESCO World Heritage Site attracted 5M+ annual visitors, overwhelming the SS163 coastal road and small villages with summer crowds.

Iconic Towns

Positano: Pastel houses cascading to beach, luxury boutiques, €50 beach chairs
Amalfi: Historic maritime republic, cathedral with Arab-Norman architecture
Ravello: Clifftop gardens (Villa Cimbrone, Villa Rufolo), classical music festival
Atrani: Smallest Italian municipality, fewer tourists, local authenticity

Each town developed distinct Instagram aesthetic, with Positano dominating as most photogenic.

SS163 Coastal Road

The single narrow coastal road connected towns—hairpin turns, no shoulders, sheer cliffs to sea. Buses and cars squeezed past each other inches apart. Summer traffic turned 30-minute drives into 3-hour gridlock.

Dramatic views made it one of world’s most scenic drives, but also most stressful. The road starred in countless Instagram photos but caused daily near-accidents.

Luxury Tourism

Amalfi Coast positioned as upscale destination—$500+ hotel rooms, $200 dinners, $150 boat trips. Celebrities (Beyoncé, Kardashians) vacationed there, amplifying aspirational appeal.

However, luxury pricing excluded middle-class tourists. The coast became preserve of wealthy travelers, unlike accessible overtourism in Cinque Terre or Dubrovnik.

Infrastructure Strain

Small villages designed for hundreds, not thousands. Positano’s 4,000 residents hosted 150K+ annual visitors. Limited parking ($40+ daily), overpriced restaurants ($35 pasta), crowded beaches.

Water and waste systems struggled during summer peak. Landslides occasionally closed SS163 for repairs.

Cultural Tensions

Locals earned year’s income during 3-month summer season. However, constant crowds, traffic, and commercialization eroded quality of life. Young people moved away—unable to afford housing converted to tourist rentals.

Traditional lemon cultivation (Amalfi lemons for limoncello) declined as tourism offered better income. Cultural heritage risked becoming tourist attraction rather than living tradition.

Climate Threats

Mediterranean coastal erosion accelerated by climate change and boat traffic. Increased storm intensity damaged infrastructure. Rising temperatures extended tourist season but threatened lemon harvests.
