AMD RX 6800 XT: RDNA 2 Comeback Matching RTX 3080 (November 2020)
The RX 6800 XT launched November 18, 2020 at $649 MSRP, AMD’s first competitive high-end GPU in years. RDNA 2’s 7nm architecture with 16GB VRAM traded blows with RTX 3080 in rasterization while costing $50 less, though ray tracing lagged.
Big Navi Arrives
The RX 6800 XT’s 72 compute units, 16GB GDDR6, and 128MB Infinity Cache delivered 2015-2365 MHz boost clocks matching or beating RTX 3080 in traditional rendering. AMD’s “rage mode” one-click overclocking and SAM (Smart Access Memory) Ryzen CPU synergy offered 5-10% extra performance. Tech press called it AMD’s return to relevance.
Ray Tracing Reality Check
While raster performance impressed, the 6800 XT’s first-gen ray accelerators delivered 30-50% lower RT performance than RTX 3080. Cyberpunk 2077 (Dec 2020) and other RT showcases exposed the gap. DLSS vs. FSR debates raged, with NVIDIA’s mature upscaling tech giving Team Green the edge in next-gen titles.
Availability Nightmare
Like RTX 3080, the 6800 XT sold out in seconds and remained unobtainable through 2021-2022. Scalpers targeted it equally, street prices hit $1,200+. AMD couldn’t escape the chip shortage/mining boom. The theoretical $50 savings vs. 3080 became irrelevant when neither existed at MSRP.
Legacy
The 6800 XT proved AMD could compete at the high end again, pressuring NVIDIA on pricing (theoretically). Its 16GB VRAM aged better than 3080’s 10GB for 4K gaming. Owners appreciated excellent 1440p/4K raster performance while accepting RT/DLSS compromises. It ended AMD’s “mid-range only” reputation.
