#AnchorPodcast: Free Podcasting for Everyone

An app that made podcast creation, hosting, and distribution completely free disrupted the industry—then got acquired by Spotify for $150 million.

The Launch

Anchor launched in February 2016 with a mobile-first approach: record, edit, and publish podcasts entirely from a phone. No expensive hosting (Libsyn, Podbean), no RSS feed complexity, no technical knowledge required.

The app included music, sound effects, and easy guest recordings. It automatically distributed to Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and everywhere else—all free.

Democratizing Podcasting

Before Anchor, starting a podcast required:

  • Hosting fees ($5-20/month)
  • Audio editing software ($60-600)
  • RSS feed knowledge
  • Podcast directory submission

Anchor eliminated every barrier. Anyone with a smartphone could podcast instantly at zero cost. The question wasn’t “can I afford to podcast?” but “what should I podcast about?”

The Spotify Acquisition

In February 2019, Spotify acquired Anchor for approximately $150 million. The streaming giant wanted podcast infrastructure—creation, hosting, and analytics—to compete with Apple’s podcast dominance.

Anchor’s free model made sense: Spotify monetized through ads and exclusive content, not hosting fees. The acquisition accelerated the podcast boom—by 2021, over 80% of new podcasts used Anchor.

The Criticism

Audio purists criticized Anchor’s mobile-first approach as encouraging low-quality content. The ease of publishing meant millions of abandoned podcasts—single-episode wonders cluttering directories.

The platform’s limitations (basic editing, poor audio quality compared to professional DAWs) meant serious creators eventually migrated to traditional tools.

The Integration

Spotify gradually integrated Anchor features directly into the Spotify app. In 2024, Spotify announced plans to sunset the Anchor brand, merging functionality into “Spotify for Podcasters.”

Anchor’s legacy: proving podcast creation could be free and accessible, spawning millions of new shows.
