#Andor: Prestige Star Wars

Disney+‘s Rogue One prequel became the most critically acclaimed Star Wars project in decades—proving the franchise could do serious political drama without Jedi or fan service.

The Serious Star Wars

Andor premiered September 2022, following Cassian Andor’s (Diego Luna) radicalization into the Rebellion. Unlike other Disney+ Star Wars shows, Andor featured no Jedi, no legacy characters, no cute droids.

Instead: prison labor, fascist bureaucracy, corporate colonialism, and the moral cost of revolution. The show was uncompromisingly adult, slowly paced, and politically sophisticated.

Critical Acclaim

Reviewers praised Andor as the best Star Wars content since The Empire Strikes Back. The writing, cinematography, and performances (especially Stellan Skarsgård as Luthen) earned comparisons to prestige cable drama.

Episode 6’s prison break and Episode 10’s “One Way Out” were called series television at its finest, regardless of franchise.

The Viewership Paradox

Despite critical love, Andor struggled with Disney+ viewership numbers. Fans debated whether audiences wanted serious Star Wars or preferred The Mandalorian’s adventure formula.

The show’s slow burn and political themes appealed to critics but didn’t generate the meme culture or merchandise sales Disney expected.

The Blueprint

Andor demonstrated Star Wars could be art, not just IP exploitation. The show’s willingness to trust audience intelligence, avoid nostalgia bait, and explore fascism’s rise felt revolutionary for franchise storytelling.

Season two (announced) promised to continue toward Rogue One’s events, potentially creating the franchise’s first truly cohesive multi-season arc.
