Andrew Yang’s Universal Basic Income platform created devoted “Yang Gang” supporters.

Origin & Impact

Entrepreneur Andrew Yang ran for president in 2019-2020 on a platform centered on Universal Basic Income ($1000/month “Freedom Dividend”) as a response to automation. His tech-forward, data-driven approach (“MATH” = Make America Think Harder) and outsider status attracted a passionate online following called the Yang Gang.

The hashtag grew as Yang qualified for debates, gave away money during his campaign, and discussed AI’s impact on jobs—issues mainstream candidates ignored. While he didn’t win the nomination, Yang brought UBI into national conversation and demonstrated how niche policy ideas could build movements through internet culture.
