Anker launched in 2011 as a direct-to-consumer electronics brand on Amazon, built on smartphone accessories—portable chargers, cables, and wall adapters. Through aggressive pricing, quality products, and masterful Amazon optimization, Anker grew from startup to $1.7 billion revenue by 2022, dominating the charging accessory market.

The Amazon Playbook

Anker founder Steven Yang (former Google engineer) identified Amazon’s rise and smartphone accessory demand as perfect opportunity. The company launched with laptop batteries, then pivoted to smartphone power banks when that market exploded with iPhone/Android adoption.

Anker’s strategy: manufacture in China (vertical integration), sell exclusively through Amazon initially (avoiding retail markups), price 20-40% below name brands, and accumulate thousands of 5-star reviews. The combination created Amazon Best Seller dominance—Anker products topped charging accessory searches for years.

PowerCore portable chargers became the default recommendation—20,000mAh for $50-$60 versus Mophie’s $100. PowerPort wall chargers delivered fast charging at half the price of Samsung/Apple equivalents. Anker emphasized reliability, warranty support, and safety certifications to overcome “cheap Chinese knockoff” perceptions.

GaN Revolution

Anker pioneered Gallium Nitride (GaN) charger adoption, releasing compact 45W-100W USB-C chargers at affordable prices ($35-$60). GaN technology allowed phone-charger-sized adapters to deliver laptop-level power, eliminating bulky power bricks.

The company expanded beyond charging: Eufy security cameras and robot vacuums, Soundcore Bluetooth speakers and earbuds, Nebula portable projectors. Each line replicated the Anker formula—Amazon-first distribution, competitive pricing, review accumulation, influencer partnerships.

By 2020, Anker operated in 100+ countries with 80 million customers. The brand proved direct-to-consumer electronics could compete with established brands through Amazon’s infrastructure, customer reviews, and Chinese manufacturing efficiency.
