AntiworkMovement

Reddit 2020-07 business active
Also known as: antiworkrantiworkworkersrights

The r/antiwork subreddit exploded from 180K to 1.8 million members (2020-2021), becoming clearinghouse for worker grievances, “quit your job” stories, and debates about work’s role in life. The movement challenged capitalist assumptions that employment defines worth and endless productivity is virtue.

Origins & Philosophy

Founded 2013 as anarchist/leftist space advocating work abolition, the subreddit’s growth during COVID reflected pandemic-era reassessment of work. Posts shared toxic boss texts, poverty wages, exploitation stories, and “I quit” screenshots—each garnering thousands of upvotes.

The philosophy ranged from literal work abolition (post-scarcity automated luxury) to reformist demands (living wages, unions, dignity). Most users sought better work conditions, not non-work utopia.

Viral Moments

Text message resignation screenshots (“I won’t be coming in anymore. Thanks.”) inspired copy-cats. Stories of workers walking out after abusive treatment or poverty wages resonated. The phrase “no one wants to work anymore” became sarcastic response to employer complaints about labor shortages.

The Great Resignation Connection

r/antiwork became spiritual home for Great Resignation participants. Workers emboldened by labor shortage leverage quit en masse, documenting journeys. The subreddit offered validation and tactics for standing up to exploitative employers.

The Fox News Disaster (2022)

January 2022: Fox News invited 30-year-old part-time dog walker/moderator Doreen Ford for interview. The unprepared, inarticulate appearance (admitted wanting to work less, teach philosophy) became PR catastrophe. The subreddit temporarily went private amid infighting.

The incident exposed tension: was antiwork about better wages/conditions or literally not working? The community split, with r/WorkReform emerging for reformist faction.

Lasting Impact

Despite drama, the movement highlighted systemic problems: stagnant wages vs. rising costs, healthcare tied to employment, lack of paid leave, at-will firing insecurity, and work-life imbalance. It normalized questioning “hustle culture” and prioritizing wellbeing over productivity.
