Also known as: aococasiocortezthe squad

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s shocking June 26, 2018 primary defeat of 10-term incumbent Joe Crowley became symbol of progressive insurgency, democratic socialism’s mainstreaming, and generational political shift. At 28, the Bronx bartender-turned-congresswoman became youngest woman ever elected to Congress and launched “The Squad” with fellow progressives Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib.

The Underdog Primary

AOC worked as bartender/waitress when she announced challenge to Crowley, the #4 House Democrat and presumed next Speaker. She raised $194,000 vs his $3M. Polls showed her losing by 36 points. Mainstream media ignored race entirely.

Her grassroots campaign knocked 120,000 doors, used viral video by Means of Production, and ran on Medicare for All, Green New Deal, abolishing ICE, and housing as human right. June 26 result: AOC 57.1%, Crowley 42.5%—biggest primary upset in decades.

The November Victory

In safe D+29 district, AOC crushed Republican 78%-14%. She became youngest congresswoman ever at 29 (sworn in January 2019). Her swearing-in outfit (white suffragette suit, red lipstick, gold hoops) went viral. First day, she participated in Nancy Pelosi’s office sit-in demanding Green New Deal vote.

The Squad Formation

AOC joined three other women of color elected November 2018: Ilhan Omar (Minnesota, first Somali-American), Rashida Tlaib (Michigan, first Palestinian-American), Ayanna Pressley (Massachusetts, defeated 10-term incumbent). The four became “The Squad”—media shorthand for progressive insurgents.

The Social Media Phenomenon

AOC’s Instagram Live cooking streams, Twitter clapbacks, and TikTok presence revolutionized political communication. Her “Are you going to impeach Trump?” stream drew millions. She weaponized social media against Fox News attacks, explaining progressive policies directly to constituents.

The Green New Deal (February 2019)

AOC and Senator Ed Markey introduced Green New Deal resolution: 10-year mobilization for net-zero emissions, jobs guarantee, and addressing inequality. Republicans mocked “ban cows/airplanes” strawmen. Democrats split between embracing and distancing. The proposal shifted Overton window on climate action.

The Trump Feud & “Send Her Back”

Trump’s July 2019 tweets (“go back…to the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came”) targeting The Squad sparked “send her back!” chants at rallies. AOC’s July 2020 House floor speech responding to Ted Yoho calling her “fucking bitch” went mega-viral.

The 2020-2023 Trajectory

AOC won reelection 71.6% (2020) and 70.6% (2022). She softened some stances (backed Biden, stopped opposing Pelosi, voted for Iron Dome), disappointing leftists. But remained progressive voice championing Medicare for All, wealth taxes, and climate action.
