Travis Scott’s annual music festival in Houston that became synonymous with tragedy after a crowd surge during the 2021 event killed 10 people and injured hundreds, sparking debates about concert safety and artist responsibility.

The Festival Era

Astroworld Festival launched in November 2018, named after Travis Scott’s third studio album and the defunct Houston amusement park. The 2018 and 2019 events were massive successes, featuring surprise guests and Travis’s signature high-energy performances.

The festival didn’t occur in 2020 due to COVID-19, creating pent-up demand for the November 5, 2021 return event at NRG Park in Houston.

The 2021 Tragedy

During Travis Scott’s headlining set on November 5, 2021, a crowd surge toward the stage resulted in a crowd crush that killed 10 people (aged 9 to 27) and injured hundreds more. Victims couldn’t breathe as they were compressed by the crowd’s movement.

The hashtag transformed from promotional to memorial as details emerged about inadequate security, ignored warnings, and Travis continuing to perform as bodies were removed from the crowd.

Aftermath

The tragedy sparked lawsuits, criminal investigations, and industry-wide discussions about crowd management, artist responsibility, and festival safety protocols. Travis Scott faced severe backlash and was removed from Coachella 2022’s lineup.
