Overview
Astroworld is Travis Scott’s third studio album, released August 3, 2018. Named after Houston’s defunct Six Flags AstroWorld theme park, the album debuted at #1 with 537,000 album-equivalent units and was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 2019 Grammys.
Commercial Success
“Sicko Mode” featuring Drake became Travis Scott’s first #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song’s three-part structure (unusual for hip-hop) and Drake’s guest verse made it a cultural phenomenon. The album featured collaborations with Frank Ocean, The Weeknd, Kid Cudi, Pharrell, and James Blake.
Astroworld Festival Tragedy
Scott launched the Astroworld Festival in Houston in 2018. The 2021 festival resulted in a crowd crush that killed 10 people and injured hundreds, leading to lawsuits and criminal investigation. The tragedy overshadowed the album’s musical legacy and raised questions about concert safety and artist responsibility.
