Overview
Axolotl, the Mexican salamander with external gills and permanent “smile,” became aquarium favorite 2018-2023. Their unique appearance (perpetual larval stage neoteny) and regenerative abilities made them fascinating pets.
Characteristics
Aquatic salamanders remaining in larval form throughout life. Feathery external gills, sizes 6-18 inches, lifespan 10-15 years. Colors: wild (brown), leucistic (pink with black eyes), albino, golden, melanoid.
Care Requirements
20+ gallon tank, 60-64°F water (require cooling in summer), carnivorous diet (bloodworms, pellets), sensitive to water quality.
Conservation Status
Critically endangered in wild (Lake Xochimilco, Mexico) due to habitat destruction. Captive-bred axolotls abundant, but wild populations nearly extinct.
TikTok & Minecraft Fame
Minecraft added axolotls (2021), sparking viral interest. TikTok axolotl content emphasized cuteness, regenerative abilities (can regrow limbs, organs).
