Also known as: BjornBabyBjornCarrier

Swedish baby carrier brand (founded 1961) popular 1990s-early 2010s. Simple front-carry design, baby facing out or in. Dominated until ergonomic babywearing movement criticized narrow seat base - “crotch dangling” vs proper hip positioning. 2015+ lost market share to Ergobaby, Tula, LILLÉbaby. Redesigned 2016 addressing concerns, but reputation damaged. Dad carrier stereotype.

The Hip Dysplasia Debate

2012-2015 International Hip Dysplasia Institute and babywearing educators warned against carriers lacking proper hip support. BabyBjörn became poster child for “what not to buy.” Facebook groups shared comparison photos showing narrow vs wide seat bases. Company defended design; eventually released “One” carrier with improved ergonomics. Early adopters felt betrayed.

Legacy Product

Remained recognizable brand despite decline. Still sold at mainstream retailers; ergonomic carriers required specialty stores. Price ($100-200) vs improved competitors made it less appealing. Became marker of uninformed parents or hand-me-downs. Babywearing community moved on; general public still bought based on name recognition and ease of use.
