#BalloonBoy was a bizarre 2009 hoax that captivated the nation for hours on October 15, 2009, when a homemade helium balloon was reported to have accidentally launched with 6-year-old Falcon Heene aboard. The nation watched live as the silver balloon drifted across Colorado skies.

Emergency services scrambled. News helicopters followed. Denver International Airport briefly shut down. Millions watched on live TV, fearing a child’s death.

The balloon landed empty. Falcon was found hiding in the attic. On CNN that evening, asked why he didn’t come out, Falcon said, “You guys said that we did this for the show”—accidentally exposing his parents’ hoax.

Richard and Mayumi Heene had orchestrated the stunt to gain reality TV fame (they’d previously appeared on Wife Swap twice). They were charged with filing a false report, served jail time, and were ordered to pay $36,000 in restitution.

The phrase “we did it for the show” became shorthand for desperate attention-seeking in the reality TV era.
