The 2017 Broadway musical adaptation of the 2007 Israeli film, a quiet chamber piece about an Egyptian police band stranded in an Israeli desert town, winning 10 Tony Awards in 2018 including Best Musical against flashier competition.

Something Different

“The Band’s Visit” opened November 9, 2017, telling a small story in an era of Broadway spectacle. When the Alexandria Ceremonial Police Orchestra arrives at the wrong Israeli town, they spend one transformative night connecting with locals through music, food, and conversation.

The musical’s minimalist staging, jazz-influenced Middle Eastern score, and refusal to manufacture drama made it the anti-”Phantom.” With a cast of 11 and one-room set, it proved intimacy could compete with spectacle. Tony Shalhoub’s understated performance as band leader Tewfiq earned him Best Actor.

At the 2018 Tonys, it won 10 awards from 11 nominations - the most awards for a musical since “The Producers” (2001). It defeated flashier competitors like “Mean Girls” and “SpongeBob SquarePants,” signaling voters’ preference for emotional nuance over Instagram moments.

The show’s Arab-Israeli cultural exchange, set in the 1990s, offered a apolitical vision of Middle Eastern coexistence rare in American theater. Critics praised its refusal to be “about” the conflict, instead focusing on universal human connection. Others saw this as evasion of uncomfortable political realities.
