The 2015 Off-Broadway/2019 Broadway musical about a high school loser taking a pill-sized supercomputer to become popular, becoming a surprise social media phenomenon through fan recordings and “Michael in the Bathroom” going viral on YouTube before its Broadway transfer.

The SQUIP Takes Control

“Be More Chill” premiered Off-Off-Broadway 2015 at the Signature Theatre (New Jersey), based on Ned Vizzini’s 2004 novel. The sci-fi high school musical followed Jeremy Heere swallowing a “SQUIP” (Super Quantum Unit Intel Processor) that guides him to coolness while destroying his friendships.

The show had a limited Jersey run, then seemingly disappeared - until fans discovered bootleg recordings on YouTube. “Michael in the Bathroom,” the emotional ballad sung by Jeremy’s abandoned best friend, went viral in 2017-2018, accumulating millions of streams without any official Broadway announcement.

The grassroots fandom - predominantly teenage girls on Tumblr, Twitter, and YouTube - demanded a commercial production. The Off-Broadway transfer (August 2018) sold out immediately based purely on social media hype. The Broadway transfer (February 2019) followed, an unprecedented path from regional theater to Broadway via YouTube virality.

The musical’s themes - technological control, social anxiety, authentic connection vs algorithmic optimization - resonated with Gen Z grappling with smartphone addiction and social media performance. The SQUIP functioned as perfect metaphor for Instagram-era self-optimization culture.

The show closed August 2019 after 175 performances, modest commercially but culturally significant as the first Broadway musical essentially crowdsourced into existence by fan demand.
