Iconic green ceramic kamado-style charcoal grill ($850-3,000) achieving cult following 2010-2020 among grilling enthusiasts for versatility, heat retention, and community culture, becoming backyard status symbol.

The Grilling Cult

Big Green Egg—Georgia-based company selling kamado (Japanese-style ceramic) grills since 1970s—reached peak cultural relevance 2010-2020. The distinctive green egg-shaped grill became backyard status symbol, featured in outdoor kitchen Pinterest boards and suburban dad Instagram posts.

The hashtag documented the obsession: “Eggheads” (official fan term) sharing smoked brisket, pizza at 700°F, overnight ribs, or whole turkeys. The pitch: BGE’s thick ceramic walls retain heat, use less charcoal, maintain temperatures (225°F-700°F+), and last decades. Online communities (EggheadForum.com, Reddit) rivaled cult religions in devotion.

The Premium Price Debate

Critics questioned spending $1,000-2,000 (plus accessories: table, cover, tools = $500-1K more) on a charcoal grill. Kamado Joe and other competitors offered similar quality for less. Yet BGE’s brand loyalty remained intense—owners claimed superior craftsmanship, lifetime warranty, and community justified costs.

By 2023, BGE represented grilling’s premium tier: casual grillers bought Weber gas ($400-800), enthusiasts chose BGE ($1,500+ all-in), and purists restored vintage Webers. The brand transcended function to become identity marker.
