#BigThiefIndie celebrates Big Thief, the Brooklyn-based folk-rock band led by Adrianne Lenker, whose emotionally raw songwriting, prolific output, and critical acclaim made them one of the most respected indie acts of the late 2010s and early 2020s.
Masterpiece Debut (2016)
Big Thief’s debut Masterpiece (May 2016) on Saddle Creek Records introduced Adrianne Lenker’s devastating songwriting and weathered voice. Songs like “Paul” and “Masterpiece” dealt with childhood trauma, loss, and healing with unflinching honesty. Buck Meek’s delicate guitar work and the rhythm section’s restraint created space for Lenker’s stories. Pitchfork awarded it an 8.0, recognizing Lenker’s literary songwriting. The album’s lo-fi production and emotional intensity recalled early Cat Power and Gillian Welch.
Prolific Era (2017-2020)
Big Thief released Capacity (2017), followed by a remarkable 2019 double-album year: U.F.O.F. and Two Hands within five months, both recorded with producer Andrew Sarlo. This prolific output—four albums in four years—showcased their work ethic and creative abundance. U.F.O.F. explored spacious, experimental soundscapes while Two Hands embraced raw rock energy. Both received widespread acclaim and Grammy nominations. Lenker’s solo albums abysskiss (2018) and songs/instrumentals (2020) demonstrated her solo acoustic brilliance.
Critical Darlings
Big Thief became critics’ favorites for their consistent quality and emotional depth. Their concerts featured extended improvisational passages and Lenker’s between-song stories. Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You (2022), a sprawling 20-track double album, topped many year-end lists. The hashtag documented tour experiences, lyrical interpretations, and appreciation for their honest, unpolished approach to indie rock.
