Overview
Bikepacking is lightweight, off-road bicycle touring using frame bags instead of pannier racks. The movement revived in the 2010s through Instagram aesthetics, ultralight gear culture, and long-distance routes like the Tour Divide.
The Tour Divide
The 2,745-mile Tour Divide (Montana to New Mexico along the Continental Divide) became bikepacking’s marquee event. The self-supported race (no outside help) sees ~200 riders annually, with fastest times around 14 days.
Frame Bag Revolution
Companies like Revelate Designs (founded 2007) and Blackburn pioneered bikepacking-specific bags: frame bags (top tube), seat bags (saddle-mounted), and handlebar rolls. These eliminated rack weight and improved handling on technical terrain.
Social Media Aesthetics
Bikepacking’s Instagram aesthetic—minimalist bags, remote campsites, golden hour bike-lean photos—drove mainstream appeal. Hashtag use surged after pandemic lockdowns (2020) as people sought multi-day outdoor adventures.
