#SwanDress refers to Icelandic artist Björk’s infamous white swan dress worn to the 73rd Academy Awards on March 25, 2001. Designed by Marjan Pejoski, the dress featured a swan wrapped around her body with the bird’s neck draping over her shoulder and an egg-laying prop she carried.
At the time, it was widely mocked. Fashion critics called it the worst-dressed moment in Oscar history. Ellen DeGeneres parodied it at the 2001 Emmys. It topped worst-dressed lists for years.
But history has been kinder. In retrospect, the swan dress is celebrated as avant-garde brilliance—Björk treating the red carpet as performance art rather than conventional glamour. It’s now displayed at the Museum of Modern Art and considered a pivotal fashion moment that challenged red carpet conformity.
The dress proved polarizing fashion often becomes iconic fashion. What seemed ridiculous in 2001 looks visionary in hindsight.
