Blizzard’s suspension of Hearthstone player Blitzchung for supporting Hong Kong protests sparked mass boycotts and debates about censorship in gaming.

The Incident

On October 8, 2019, Hong Kong Hearthstone player Chung “Blitzchung” Ng Wai said “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our age” in a post-match interview. Blizzard banned him for a year, stripped his prize money, and fired the casters.

Backlash Explodes

Players accused Blizzard of bowing to Chinese censorship. #BlizzardBoycott trended globally. Fans deleted accounts, refunded purchases, and protested at BlizzCon. American politicians condemned Blizzard.

Damage Control

Blizzard reduced the ban to 6 months and restored prize money, but the damage was done. The controversy highlighted how American companies self-censor to appease China’s authoritarian government.
