The noise-cancelling headphones that dominated air travel and commutes before Sony dethroned Bose’s 15-year reign.

ANC Dominance

Bose pioneered consumer noise-cancelling with the QuietComfort line in 2000, but the QC35 (June 2016, $349) represented peak dominance. Wireless Bluetooth, 20-hour battery, and industry-leading active noise cancellation made them the default choice for frequent flyers and commuters. Airports and airplanes were filled with QC35s’ distinctive curved design.

Unchallenged Reign

For years, “noise-cancelling headphones” meant Bose. The QC35 II (2017) added Google Assistant integration. Competitors existed, but none matched Bose’s combination of comfort, ANC effectiveness, and reliability. Business travelers, audiophiles (despite mediocre sound quality), and students alike swore by them. Bose’s ANC technology felt like magic: airplane engine roar vanished.

Sony’s Disruption

Sony’s WH-1000XM2 (2017) and especially XM3 (2018) challenged Bose with superior sound quality and comparable ANC for the same $350 price. Reviews crowned Sony the new king. Bose responded with the 700 (2019), abandoning the QuietComfort name but failing to reclaim the crown. By 2020, Sony held 30%+ of the premium headphone market to Bose’s 20%. The QuietComfort era had ended.
