Overview
Boston Terrier, “The American Gentleman” for tuxedo-like markings, became beloved companion dogs throughout 2010s-2020s. Compact size (12-25 pounds), friendly temperament, and distinctive bug-eyed appearance made them popular urban pets.
Breed Development
Created in Boston 1870s from English Bulldog/White English Terrier crosses. First American-bred dog recognized by AKC (1893). Massachusetts state dog.
Characteristics
Brachycephalic (flat-faced), large expressive eyes, erect ears, short tail. Friendly, intelligent, eager to please. Good with children, adaptable to apartment living. Lifespan 11-13 years.
Health Challenges
Brachycephalic syndrome (breathing difficulties), eye problems (corneal ulcers, cataracts), deafness, patellar luxation. Less extreme than Bulldogs/Pugs but still face flat-face complications.
Social Media Presence
Boston Terrier content emphasizes goofiness, snorting sounds, expressive faces. “Boss Terrier” personality—confident, sometimes stubborn. Popular in urban environments for manageable size and moderate exercise needs.
