#BTSMapOfTheSoul
Overview
#BTSMapOfTheSoul marked BTS’s ambitious two-part album series: Map of the Soul: Persona (April 2019) and Map of the Soul: 7 (February 2020). Inspired by Jungian psychology and Murray Stein’s book Map of the Soul, the albums explored identity, shadow selves, and collective consciousness.
Record-Breaking Releases
Persona sold 3.2 million copies in its first week and featured “Boy With Luv” (feat. Halsey), which debuted at #8 on the Hot 100. Map of the Soul: 7 became the best-selling album in South Korean history (4.7M+ copies) and topped charts in 21 countries.
Pandemic Impact
The planned Map of the Soul world tour (2020) was canceled due to COVID-19, making MOTS: 7 the last BTS album released before the pandemic reshaped the music industry. The hashtag surged during:
- Persona release (April 12, 2019)
- Wembley Stadium shows (June 2019, 120K attendees)
- Map of the Soul: 7 release (Feb 21, 2020)
- “ON” kinetic manifesto film (28M views in 24 hours)
- Grammy nomination announcement (Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, 2021)
Artistic Depth
The series showcased BTS’s maturity through complex concepts like Carl Jung’s personas, shadows, and egos. Solo tracks (“Filter,” “My Time,” “Inner Child,” “Moon”) allowed members to explore personal narratives within the overarching psychological framework.
