#Buffer: Simple Social Media Scheduling

A beautifully simple social media scheduling tool became famous for transparent company culture and “work from anywhere” policies—proving remote-first companies could thrive.

The Launch

Buffer launched in November 2010, founded by Joel Gascoigne and Leo Widrich. The tool did one thing exceptionally well: schedule social media posts. No complexity, no enterprise features, just elegant scheduling.

The name referenced the concept: build a “buffer” of content to publish throughout the day. Users added posts to their queue; Buffer distributed them at optimal times.

The Viral Growth

Buffer famously grew through content marketing. Co-founder Leo Widrich wrote 150 guest posts in 9 months, driving thousands of signups. The strategy became a case study in content-driven SaaS growth.

The free tier (schedule up to 10 posts) served as perpetual marketing. Paid plans ($15-99/month) added more posts, analytics, and team features.

The Transparency Experiment

In 2013, Buffer publicly shared all employee salaries using a transparent formula. The radical transparency extended to revenue, equity, and business metrics—published openly on the company blog.

The transparency attracted both admiration (progressive workplace culture!) and criticism (publicity stunt!), but it differentiated Buffer in a crowded market.

Remote-First Pioneer

Buffer went fully remote in 2015, years before COVID made it standard. The company’s documentation of remote work practices influenced countless startups.

Buffer represented the “build a lifestyle business, not a unicorn” philosophy—profitable, sustainable, remote, with healthy culture over hypergrowth.

The Competition

Hootsuite offered more features. Later dominated Instagram scheduling. But Buffer’s simplicity and brand (transparent, ethical, remote-friendly) attracted creators and small businesses.

By 2022, Buffer had 140,000 paying customers and remained profitable without massive VC funding.

Cultural Impact

Buffer proved business software could prioritize ethics, transparency, and quality of life while remaining competitive and profitable.
