Overview
#BurnaBoyAfricanGiant celebrates Burna Boy’s breakthrough fourth studio album, released July 26, 2019. The album earned a Grammy nomination, critical acclaim, and established Burna Boy as Afrobeats’ most politically conscious global voice.
History
African Giant was Burna Boy’s declaration of continental pride and artistic ambition. The 19-track album featured diverse African sounds—highlife, dancehall, reggae, Afrobeat—alongside collaborations with Jorja Smith, YG, Future, and Jeremih.
The album title referenced Burna’s frustration with being relegated to the “Best International Act” category at the 2018 BET Awards instead of competing in main categories. He declared himself an “African Giant,” demanding global recognition on equal terms.
African Giant was nominated for Best World Music Album at the 2020 Grammys (Burna’s first nomination) and won Album of the Year at the All Africa Music Awards. Tracks like “Anybody,” “On the Low,” and “Dangote” became anthems.
Cultural Impact
The album challenged Western perceptions of African artists as niche or novelty acts. Burna Boy’s unapologetic Pan-Africanism and refusal to dilute his sound for crossover appeal resonated globally. He performed at Coachella 2019 (controversially small font on poster, sparking debate) and became a festival headliner worldwide.
The hashtag became a rallying cry for African excellence and self-determination. Burna Boy’s Grammy win the following year (Twice as Tall, 2021) validated the “African Giant” ethos.
