#Calendly: The End of Email Tennis

A simple scheduling tool eliminated the “what time works for you?” email chains—and became worth $3 billion by solving an obvious problem elegantly.

The Problem

Before Calendly, scheduling meetings required endless email back-and-forth: “I’m free Tuesday or Thursday.” “Thursday doesn’t work, how about Wednesday?” “Wednesday afternoon?” “Morning only.” Repeat until everyone wanted to scream.

Tope Awotona founded Calendly in 2013 to eliminate this friction. The tool synced with calendars, displayed availability, and let people book time slots directly.

The Viral Growth

Calendly’s genius was network effects: each meeting scheduled introduced new users to the tool. Recipients clicked Calendly links, saw the elegance, and signed up immediately.

The free tier handled basic scheduling; Premium ($8-12/month) added features like group meetings, reminders, and integrations. By 2021, Calendly claimed 10 million users.

The Professional Standard

Consultants, recruiters, salespeople, and anyone who scheduled frequent meetings adopted Calendly. “Here’s my Calendly link” became professional shorthand for “pick a time that works for you.”

The tool’s simplicity was its strength—no complex features, just effortless scheduling. Competitors (Doodle, Acuity, ScheduleOnce) existed, but Calendly’s clean UX dominated.

The Pandemic Boom

Remote work made Calendly essential. Without office walk-ups or quick hallway conversations, digital scheduling became critical infrastructure.

In January 2021, Calendly raised funding at a $3 billion valuation without having taken VC money for its first 8 years. The company had built profitably by solving one specific problem exceptionally well.

Cultural Impact

Calendly represented “software eating the world” in its purest form—a simple idea eliminating widespread frustration and building billion-dollar value.

The phrase “just Calendly me” entered professional vocabulary.
