Chicxulub Impact Evidence Strengthened

In March 2010, an international panel of 41 scientists published a comprehensive review in Science affirming that the Chicxulub asteroid impact 66 million years ago—not volcanism, climate change, or gradual decline—was the primary cause of the dinosaur extinction event that ended the Cretaceous period.

The 10-15 kilometer asteroid struck Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula with force equivalent to 100 million megatons of TNT (2+ billion Hiroshima bombs), creating a 180-kilometer crater, triggering magnitude 10+ earthquakes, massive tsunamis, and ejecting debris that ignited global wildfires. Soot and dust blocked sunlight for years, collapsing photosynthesis and food chains.

The 2010 consensus statement resolved decades of debate between impact proponents and those favoring Deccan Traps volcanism in India. While volcanic activity contributed stress, the evidence overwhelmingly supported impact as the killing blow: iridium layer (rare on Earth, common in asteroids) dating to exactly 66 million years ago, shocked quartz, and mass extinction of 75%+ species concentrated at that boundary.

The announcement generated 35+ million impressions, particularly around anniversaries and new dinosaur discoveries. The Chicxulub impact became the textbook example of catastrophic change reshaping Earth’s biosphere—eliminating dominant lifeforms (non-avian dinosaurs, pterosaurs, marine reptiles, ammonites) while enabling mammalian diversification leading to humans.

Subsequent research (2010s-2020s) revealed impact details: asteroid struck at optimal 60° angle maximizing atmospheric debris, impact occurred in shallow sulfur-rich seabed amplifying climate effects, and extinction took hours to decades depending on location. The impact reminds us that Earth’s history includes catastrophic punctuations alongside gradual evolution.
