Donald Glover’s SNL hosting gig where he debuted “This Is America” and showcased versatility.
Origin & Impact
Donald Glover hosted Saturday Night Live on May 5, 2018, pulling double duty as host and musical guest (as Childish Gambino). The hashtag exploded when he premiered “This Is America” during the show, creating instant cultural moment. His sketches—including a Kanye West parody and an R. Kelly music video sketch—demonstrated his comedic range beyond Atlanta.
The episode showcased Glover at his creative peak: actor, rapper, comedian, cultural critic. His opening monologue about being the first Black host since 2017 (three months prior) highlighted SNL’s diversity problem. The musical performances of “Saturday” with SZA and the iconic “This Is America” defined 2018’s most-watched SNL episode. The hashtag celebrated an artist operating at the highest level across multiple mediums simultaneously.
