Chopped premiered on Food Network in January 2009, becoming the network’s longest-running competition (50+ seasons, 600+ episodes). Four chefs compete using mystery basket ingredients, one eliminated per round. Host Ted Allen delivers eliminations: “You’ve been chopped.”

Format

Rounds: Appetizer ($10K), Entrée ($10K), Dessert ($10K total prize). Judges (Marc Murphy, Amanda Freitag, Chris Santos, rotating) critique based on taste, creativity, presentation. Mystery baskets contain 4 ingredients (often bizarre): gummy bears, durian fruit, canned haggis.

Iconic Moments

Ice Cream Machine Sabotage - Chefs fight over single machine, drama ensues
Blood Sausage - Frequent mystery ingredient, contestants hate it
Forgetting Ingredient - Automatic chopping if basket item not used
Dessert Disasters - Time mismanagement, raw cake centers, ice cream soup

Spinoffs

Chopped Junior (kids), Chopped After Hours (relaxed), Chopped Sweets (dessert-only), Celebrity Chopped

Legacy

Chopped’s 30-minute runtime and high turnover (16 new chefs weekly) made it Food Network’s most binge-able show. The mystery basket format inspired Cutthroat Kitchen, Beat Bobby Flay.
