Chromecast

Chromecast launched July 24, 2013 as Google’s $35 HDMI streaming dongle, dramatically undercutting Roku ($49+) and Apple TV ($99). The thumb-sized device had no remote, no interface, no buttons—users “cast” content from phones/tablets/laptops to TVs. Google sold out initial inventory in hours and sold 100+ million units by 2020.

Technical Innovation

Unlike traditional streaming boxes, Chromecast acted as a dumb receiver: phones sent URLs to the dongle, which directly streamed content from the internet (not from the phone). This prevented battery drain and allowed interruption-free playback. The open Google Cast protocol let any app integrate casting functionality.

Ecosystem Strategy

Chromecast’s brilliance was its simplicity: no user interface meant no updates, no lag, no app store curation headaches. Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, and HBO supported it at launch. Google subsidized hardware costs (likely losing money per unit) to boost Android ecosystem lock-in and collect viewing data.

Chromecast Ultra & 4K

Chromecast Ultra (2016, $69) added 4K HDR support and Ethernet port, targeting high-end users. Chromecast with Google TV (2020, $49.99) abandoned the cast-only model by adding a remote and Android TV interface—essentially becoming the Roku competitor Google avoided for seven years.

Cultural Impact

“Just Chromecast it” entered vocabulary like “Google it.” The device democratized smart TV functionality for any HDMI television, extending streaming wars into millions of “dumb TVs.” Chromecast’s casting UI (little blue icon) became universally recognized across apps.

Google discontinued original Chromecast in 2022, replaced entirely by Chromecast with Google TV. The original’s $35 price point and minimal design proved streaming devices didn’t need complex interfaces—they just needed to work.
