The migrant caravans from Central America driven partly by climate-induced drought and crop failures that became 2018-2020 political flashpoint.

Climate and Migration

The 2018 Central American migrant caravan included thousands fleeing violence, poverty, and drought. Climate change intensified Central America’s “Dry Corridor” droughts, destroying subsistence farming. Studies showed direct links between drought severity and northward migration. But political discourse ignored climate drivers, focusing only on border security.

Crop Failures and Desperation

Consecutive droughts (2014-2019) devastated coffee, corn, and bean production in Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador. Farmers couldn’t feed families. Migration became survival strategy. Climate scientists predicted worsening droughts would drive more migration—yet U.S. climate policy and immigration policy remained disconnected.

Political Weaponization

The Trump administration used caravans to justify border wall and family separations, ignoring climate dimensions. Climate activists pointed to U.S. emissions contributing to droughts forcing migration, arguing for climate responsibility. By 2023, climate-driven migration from Latin America continued increasing, but policy responses remained punitive rather than addressing root causes.
