The pastel-colored, three-ingredient bread that looked too ethereal to eat.
Viral Wave (Summer 2020)
Cloud bread recipes circulated in low-carb communities for years (egg whites, sugar, cornstarch), but TikTok reinvented it in July 2020 with pastel food coloring and ASMR-friendly whisking videos. The pillowy, colorful result looked like edible clouds. Videos showing the satisfying texture accumulated hundreds of millions of views.
Appeal
The trend combined pandemic baking energy with visual appeal and simplicity. Users created rainbow cloud bread, ombré versions, and character-themed variations. The texture—light, airy, slightly sweet—divided opinion: some found it delightful, others thought it tasted like “sweet air.”
Rapid Decline
By September 2020, cloud bread fatigue set in. The novelty wore off quickly, and the taste didn’t justify repeat making for most home cooks. It became a footnote in pandemic TikTok food trends, overshadowed by dalgona coffee, feta pasta, and other viral recipes.
