Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend (November 2018) is a comedy interview podcast hosted by Conan O’Brien with sidekicks Sona Movsesian and Matt Gourley that extended Conan’s comedy legacy into podcasting as his late-night career wound down.
Format & Evolution
Each episode features Conan interviewing a celebrity guest, preceded by banter with assistant Sona and producer Matt. The show strips away TV formality, letting Conan’s wit and curiosity shine in long-form conversations.
Conan’s self-deprecating humor about his career struggles (Tonight Show ousting, TBS move, show cancellation) and existential musings about celebrity create unexpected depth. His genuine interest in guests elicits revealing conversations.
Career Transition
Launching as Conan prepared to end his TBS show, the podcast proved he could thrive in audio. By 2021, after ending his 28-year late-night run, the podcast became central to his post-TV career.
The show’s success led to Conan’s HBO Max travel series (Conan Without Borders evolved into Conan O’Brien Must Go) and a broader Team Coco podcast network.
By 2023, with 300+ episodes featuring everyone from Michelle Obama to comedians to musicians, the show demonstrated late-night hosts could successfully transition to podcasting.
