The Continental Divide Trail is a 3,100-mile trail from Mexico to Canada along the Rocky Mountains, known as the most challenging of the “Triple Crown” trails (AT, PCT, CDT). The hashtag documents the wildest, least-developed long-distance hike in America.

History

The CDT was designated in 1978 but remains only 70% complete on actual trail (rest is road walking or route-finding). Only ~200 people attempt a thru-hike annually, with completion rates around 60%. The hashtag grew as AT/PCT completers sought the ultimate challenge.

Challenges

Extreme weather, grizzly country, lightning exposure above treeline, water scarcity in New Mexico, snow in Colorado’s high passes (often into July), and significant navigation skills required. Unlike AT/PCT, the CDT offers multiple route options and requires backcountry judgment.

Triple Crown Culture

Completing all three trails (AT, PCT, CDT) earns “Triple Crowner” status. As of 2023, fewer than 500 people have achieved this. The hashtag celebrates these accomplishments alongside individual CDT journeys.
