What Is Copium?
“Copium” is a satirical blend of “cope” and “opium” — a fictional drug people take to deal with loss, disappointment, or denial. It mocks someone for making excuses or rationalizing failure instead of accepting reality.
Origins on 4chan
The term originated on 4chan’s /pol/ board around 2018, often depicted as Pepe the Frog inhaling “copium” from a tank. It was weaponized during political debates to mock supporters clinging to hope despite setbacks.
By 2020, “copium” spread to Twitch, Twitter, and Reddit, becoming mainstream internet slang beyond political contexts.
Usage in Gaming & Crypto
The meme exploded in gaming (fans defending bad games), sports (delusional team loyalty), and especially cryptocurrency (investors holding failing coins). “He’s on that copium” meant someone was in denial about obvious failure.
Twitch Adoption
Twitch streamers and chat culture adopted “copium” as a universal response to coping behavior. Emotes featuring copium tanks became standard. By 2021, it was one of the internet’s go-to mockery terms.
