Courtney Barnett’s Sometimes I Sit and Sometimes I Stand made deadpan observations and anxiety hilarious, turning the Australian slacker into indie rock’s most quotable songwriter.

The Album

Released March 23, 2015, Sometimes I Sit and Sometimes I Stand was Courtney Barnett’s debut album. The Melbourne singer-songwriter had released two EPs (I’ve Got a Friend Called Emily Ferris, 2012; The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas, 2013) that built buzz. Her full-length delivered on the hype with conversational lyrics, crunchy guitars, and deadpan delivery.

The Sound

Barnett’s music blended slacker rock, grunge, and folk. Her guitar work was influenced by Sonic Youth and Pavement—fuzzy, loose, melodic. Her voice was matter-of-fact, Australian accent thick. She sang like she was telling stories at a bar, not performing for thousands.

Standout Tracks

  • “Pedestrian at Best” - Self-deprecating anthem, “Give me all your money and I’ll make some origami, honey”
  • “Depressionista” - Dark humor about mental health, “All I wanted was a job and a car”
  • “Dead Fox” - About finding a dead fox, meditation on mortality
  • “Elevator Operator” - Story of an office worker’s suicide fantasy
  • “Nobody Really Cares If You Don’t Go to the Party” - Social anxiety anthem
  • “Kim’s Caravan” - Tender closing track about a friend’s struggles

The Lyrics

Barnett’s genius was in mundane details: grocery shopping, parallel parking, house hunting. She turned everyday anxiety into poetry. “Before You Gotta Go” compared a relationship to milk going sour. “Aqua Profunda” namechecked a specific Melbourne pool. Her specificity made songs universal.

Critical and Commercial Success

Sometimes I Sit debuted #20 on Billboard 200—rare for Australian indie rock. Critics raved: Pitchfork 8.1/10, Rolling Stone 4/5, The Guardian 5/5. The album was nominated for Best New Artist at the 2016 Grammys (losing to Meghan Trainor, tragically).

Influence and Later Career

Barnett toured relentlessly, played SNL, and collaborated with Kurt Vile (Lotta Sea Lice, 2017). Follow-up Tell Me How You Really Feel (2018) continued her slacker-poet style. She remains Australia’s best cultural export since Tame Impala.

Sometimes I Sit proved you don’t need to be grandiose—just honest, funny, and specific. Barnett’s influence is heard in every indie artist who sings about groceries and existential dread.
