Croatian coastal city used as King’s Landing in Game of Thrones, sparking tourism explosion from 800K (2012) to 1.3M (2018) annual visitors. UNESCO warned overtourism threatened World Heritage status, prompting cruise ship limits and filming restrictions.

Game of Thrones Effect

Dubrovnik’s old town, surrounded by medieval walls, portrayed King’s Landing (and Qarth) across Game of Thrones’ 8 seasons. Fans flocked to walk Cersei’s “Walk of Shame” steps, stand where Joffrey died, and climb walls Tyrion scaled.

Tourism jumped 65% during GOT run. Walking tours ($30-50) capitalized on filming locations. Businesses rebranded: King’s Landing Rooms, Hodor’s Door restaurants. The city earned €50,000 daily filming fees but damage to marble streets cost more to repair.

Overtourism Crisis

UNESCO threatened to revoke World Heritage status due to overcrowding. Daily visitor counts reached 10,000 in 1km² old town—40x resident population. Cruise ships dumping 8,000+ passengers daily overwhelmed the city.

The Stradun (main street) became impassable gridlock. Residents moved out as Airbnb conversions skyrocketed—old town population dropped 50% since 1990s. Locals: “We’re becoming Disneyland.”

Regulatory Response

Croatia limited cruise ships to 4,000 passengers daily and banned new ships over 100,000 tons. Entry fees considered for old town. CCTV cameras monitored crowd levels.

GOT filming moved to Spain for later seasons partially due to Dubrovnik’s overcrowding making filming logistically difficult. The city recognized biting the hand that fed tourism golden goose.

Beyond Game of Thrones

Dubrovnik’s Venetian architecture, baroque churches, and Adriatic setting made it worthy destination pre-GOT. Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) also filmed there, adding to film tourism appeal.

The city invested in shoulder season promotion, encouraging autumn/spring visits to distribute tourist load year-round.
