The image of Michael Jordan crying during his 2009 Hall of Fame speech that became the internet’s universal symbol of sports loss and sadness.

The Original Photo

During his 2009 Basketball Hall of Fame induction speech, Michael Jordan cried while discussing his late father. The Getty Images photo captured a vulnerable moment from the usually stoic Jordan. Initially it was just a poignant sports photo—but by 2012, the internet saw meme potential.

Meme Explosion (2014-2016)

Crying Jordan exploded during the 2015-2016 NBA season. The face was photoshopped onto losing teams’ logos, athletes’ jerseys, and rival fans. Every playoff loss spawned Crying Jordan memes. The Charlotte Hornets (Jordan’s team) losing was irresistible meme fodder. By 2016, major sports media outlets were creating Crying Jordan content.

Overuse and Decline

By 2017-2018, Crying Jordan was everywhere—overused to the point of exhaustion. Athletes complained it was disrespectful. Jordan himself never publicly commented. The meme represented peak internet sports culture: ruthless, hilarious, and slightly cruel. While it declined after 2018, it remained recognizable—a meme hall of famer itself.
