#CrystalLake is Peacock’s A24-produced Friday the 13th prequel series, which premiered October 15, 2026. It rewinds the slasher franchise to before Jason Voorhees drowns in the lake, reframing the story as a grief drama about his mother Pamela — played by Linda Cardellini — rather than as another entry in the hockey-mask body-count tradition. The series was announced in 2022 with Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller as showrunner; Fuller left in 2024 and It: Welcome to Derry veteran Brad Caleb Kane took over the version viewers now have.

The Show
Peacock’s own logline sets the frame: Pamela Voorhees is a single mother who “has been unable to shake her grief after her young, sickly son Jason tragically drowned in the town lake.” Those are the events the 1980 film treats as backstory; the series makes them its subject. Rather than foregrounding a masked killer, Crystal Lake follows Pam’s unraveling in the days, weeks and months around the loss — a bet on character drama inside a franchise whose next-chapter sequels have generally bet on sequence-shot kills instead.
Cast & Creators
- Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees. The lead role, previously played by Betsy Palmer in the 1980 film. Critics in the pre-release wave singled her out as the show’s strongest asset.
- Callum Vinson as young Jason. A silent, sickly child rather than the franchise’s eventual slasher.
- William Catlett and others in the supporting ensemble.
- Brad Caleb Kane — showrunner. Replaced Bryan Fuller, who left the project in 2024.
- A24 — studio. The studio behind the 2024 MaXXXine and 2022’s X, producing a legacy-horror franchise series.
Development
The series was first announced in October 2022, with Fuller attached as showrunner and A24 as studio partner. Fuller’s version was expected to run on Peacock and lean on his Hannibal-era auteur sensibility. Fuller departed in 2024, citing creative differences in various trade reports; Kane, whose credits include HBO Max’s It: Welcome to Derry and Billions, replaced him. Several outlets described the premiere date as a near-miss: Friday the 13th did not fall in October 2026, so Peacock set the launch for Thursday, October 15 — Friday the 14th-adjacent, rather than a thematic Friday the 13th drop.
Critical Reception
Dark Horizons’ review roundup, published before the premiere, put the show at 86% (7.6/10) on Rotten Tomatoes with 28 reviews counted. The consensus, as that roundup summarized, is that critics agree viewers wanting a serious drama should look elsewhere, while viewers wanting a fun new entry in the franchise — one that is respectful of the lore, embraces its entertaining tone and includes “wild kills” — will be satisfied. IGN’s review (via the same roundup) credited Cardellini’s performance as the series’ anchor and gave showrunner Brad Caleb Kane credit for his handling of the original source material. Audience reception post-premiere will likely be measured against those pre-release expectations rather than against Carrie-style literary comparisons.
