DankMemes

Also known as: dankdank-meme

“Dank” originated in cannabis culture (1980s-1990s) meaning high-quality weed, but transformed into internet slang around 2013 to describe exceptionally good memes—the opposite of normie/stale content. “Dank memes” became a quality seal for edgy, ironic, or absurdist humor that casual internet users wouldn’t understand.

Reddit Era (2013-2016)

r/DankMemes launched 2013 as a hub for cutting-edge meme formats before they hit mainstream platforms like Facebook or Instagram. “Dank” signified insider knowledge—you had to be chronically online to get the references. Early dank memes included rare Pepes, MLG montage parodies, and surrealist edits with excessive filters.

The subreddit exploded to 500K+ members by 2016, establishing format hierarchies: SpongeBob memes (reliably dank), minion memes (normie trash), and “vintage” memes (ironically resurrected old formats).

Characteristics & Aesthetics

Dank memes embrace irony layers, niche references, offensive edge (without crossing into hate speech), and rapid format turnover. Key elements: deep-fried filters (JPEG artifacts, distortion, oversaturation), surreal juxtapositions, self-aware meta-humor, and rejecting corporate/advertiser-friendly content.

The “dankness” scale became internet shorthand: normie < dank < surreal < cursed. Each level represented deeper internet immersion and willingness to embrace absurdity over comprehensibility.

Mainstream Adoption (2017-2020)

By 2017, “dank” entered mainstream vocabulary as brands, politicians, and parents attempted (and failed) to deploy dank memes. Hillary Clinton’s “Pokémon GO to the polls” (2016) became the ultimate anti-dank cautionary tale—trying too hard kills the meme.

Instagram accounts like @shitheadsteve and @moistbuddha curated dank memes for 5M+ followers each, while TikTok Gen Z rejected “dank” as millennial cringe (2020+). The term peaked 2018-2019 before fragmenting into more specific subgenres: deep-fried, surreal, wholesome, cursed.

Legacy

“Dank” as a descriptor declined 2020+ as meme culture became too fractured for single quality labels. Gen Z preferred “unhinged,” “feral,” or “chronically online” to describe next-level humor. r/DankMemes reached 7M+ members by 2023 but lost cultural cachet as TikTok supplanted Reddit as meme origin point.
