The moody, intellectual aesthetic that romanticizes elite universities, classic literature, and the vibe of a Gothic library — peaking in 2021 as students returned to campus and TikTok embraced the look.
The 2021 Explosion
Dark Academia existed on Tumblr since 2015, but TikTok made it mainstream in 2021. The hashtag accumulated over 10 billion views by year’s end.
The aesthetic:
- Fashion: Tweed blazers, turtlenecks, Oxford shirts, loafers, pleated skirts
- Colors: Brown, beige, black, burgundy, forest green, navy
- Activities: Reading classics (Dostoyevsky, Wilde, Poe), drinking black coffee, writing in leather journals, wandering through libraries
- Vibe: Scholarly, melancholic, slightly pretentious, murder-mystery adjacent
The fantasy: You attend Oxford or Cambridge, spend afternoons in ancient libraries, discuss philosophy with brilliant friends, and maybe solve a murder.
The Influences
Donna Tartt’s The Secret History (1992): The foundational text — elite college students, Greek studies, moral ambiguity, murder.
Dead Poets Society (1989), The Riot Club (2014), Kill Your Darlings (2013): Films about exclusive education and intense friendships.
Harry Potter Hogwarts aesthetic (minus the magic).
Classical music: Chopin, Debussy, Tchaikovsky became the soundtrack.
The 2021 Context
Students returned to campus after online learning. The romanticization of in-person education felt fresh again.
Escapism: Dark Academia offered intellectualism as aspiration — a counterpoint to influencer culture’s anti-intellectualism.
Class signaling: The aesthetic screamed “I go to an elite university” (or wish I did).
The Critique
Elitism: Romanticizes exclusive, expensive education. Ignores the gatekeeping, debt, and privilege required to access it.
Whiteness: Dark Academia imagery is overwhelmingly white, European, and Eurocentric. Scholars of color rarely appear in the aesthetic’s vision.
Performative intellectualism: Reading The Secret History and wearing a blazer doesn’t make you an intellectual.
Toxic academic culture: Glorifies overwork, burnout, and unhealthy obsession with achievement.
Sub-Genres
Light Academia: Same vibes but lighter colors (cream, beige, pastels) and less moody
Chaotic Academia: Messy, stressed, realistic version (coffee-stained notes, all-nighters, existential dread)
STEM Academia: Lab coats, beakers, science journals instead of literature
The Fashion
Where to shop:
- Thrift stores (vintage blazers, Oxford shirts)
- Uniqlo, H&M, Zara (affordable basics)
- Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers (if you have money)
TikTok outfit formulas:
- Turtleneck + blazer + pleated skirt + loafers
- Oxford shirt + sweater vest + trousers + brogues
Legacy
Dark Academia made intellectualism cool again (at least aesthetically). It also exposed how much people crave structure, community, and purpose — things traditional education (ideally) provides.
