#Descript: Edit Audio Like a Document

A podcast editing tool that let creators edit audio by editing text transformed production workflows—and pioneered AI voice cloning for content creation.

The Innovation

Descript launched in September 2017 with a radical idea: transcribe audio automatically, then let users edit the recording by editing the text. Delete a word from the transcript, and that word disappears from the audio.

Founder Andrew Mason (Groupon’s former CEO) built the tool to simplify podcast editing. Traditional DAWs (Digital Audio Workspaces) had steep learning curves. Descript made audio editing as simple as word processing.

The Podcasting Revolution

For podcast creators drowning in editing, Descript was transformative. Remove filler words (“um,” “uh”) with one click. Rearrange segments by cutting and pasting text. Find and delete specific phrases instantly.

The tool used AI to smooth audio edits, making cuts nearly invisible. What previously took hours in Audacity or Adobe Audition now took minutes.

Overdub: AI Voice Cloning

In 2019, Descript launched Overdub—AI voice cloning that let creators “re-record” words without actually recording. Type text, and your AI voice spoke it in your voice.

Need to fix a mispronounced word? Type the correct version; Overdub generated the audio in your voice. The feature was simultaneously amazing and concerning—deepfake technology for content creators.

Descript required voice consent and added watermarking to prevent misuse, but the ethical implications were obvious.

Video Expansion

Descript expanded beyond audio, adding video editing with the same text-based paradigm. Edit video interviews by editing transcripts. The tool became popular for repurposing long-form content into social clips.

By 2022, Descript had raised $100 million at a $1 billion valuation, powering podcasts, YouTube videos, and corporate communications.

Cultural Impact

Descript democratized media production—professional editing without professional skills. It represented AI’s potential to lower creative barriers while raising questions about authenticity.
