Ed Sheeran’s third studio album ÷ (Divide) released in March 2017, becoming the best-selling album globally that year with 6.1 million pure sales. Lead single “Shape of You” became the most-streamed song on Spotify ever (3.5+ billion streams), while “Perfect” provided wedding anthem for generation. The album’s 16-track standard edition produced four Top 10 hits and sold over 26 million copies worldwide.

The Mathematical Album Series

÷ continued Ed’s mathematical symbol album titling (after + in 2011, × in 2014), with each representing different life stages. Divide explored Ed’s evolution from struggling artist to global superstar, addressing fame, relationships, and homecoming themes.

The album’s diversity—pop (“Shape of You”), ballads (“Perfect,” “Photograph”), folk (“Galway Girl”), rap (“Eraser”), and soul (“Dive”)—showcased Ed’s versatility. Production from Johnny McDaid, Steve Mac, and Benny Blanco created radio-ready polish while maintaining Ed’s singer-songwriter authenticity.

Shape of You Dominance

“Shape of You” became 2017’s unavoidable hit, topping Hot 100 for 12 weeks and reaching #1 in 44 countries. The tropical house-influenced production, marimba hook, and Ed’s signature loop pedal created earworm that conquered global charts.

The song became Spotify’s most-streamed ever, surpassing previous record holder Drake’s “One Dance.” By 2023, “Shape of You” had 3.5+ billion Spotify streams—only surpassed years later by The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights.”

Critics noted “Shape of You” sounded unlike Ed’s previous work—more Max Martin pop production than acoustic troubadour. The departure alienated some longtime fans but expanded audience exponentially.

Perfect Wedding Phenomenon

“Perfect” became generation’s wedding song—slower, romantic ballad perfect for first dances. The song reached #1 on Hot 100 (Ed’s second from album) and spawned multiple versions: “Perfect Duet” with Beyoncé and “Perfect Symphony” with Andrea Bocelli.

The Beyoncé duet demonstrated Ed’s crossover appeal—collaborating with pop, rap, and classical artists. The song’s lyrics (“I found a love / for me”) became wedding vows, Instagram captions, and tattoo inspiration for millions.

Commercial Dominance

÷ debuted at #1 in 36 countries with first-week sales of 672,000 (U.S.), 671,000 (UK)—Ed’s biggest debut. The album spent 21 weeks at #1 in UK, tying Adele’s 21 record. It became first album to spend top 10 entire calendar year since Adele’s 21 (2011).

Four singles reached Top 10 on Hot 100: “Shape of You” (#1), “Perfect” (#1), “Galway Girl” (#13 UK, international hit), and “Castle on the Hill” (#6). The album sold over 26 million copies globally, going diamond in multiple countries.

The Divide Tour

The Divide Tour (2017-2019) became highest-grossing tour ever at the time ($776 million), surpassing U2’s 360° Tour. Ed’s solo performances—just him, loop pedal, and guitar—selling out stadiums proved his drawing power. The minimalist production kept costs low, maximizing profit.

The tour’s success demonstrated Ed’s unique position—pop star who could headline stadiums with acoustic setup. The achievement felt more impressive given no dancers, elaborate staging, or backing band.
