Drum and bass (DnB) is a genre of electronic music characterized by fast breakbeats (typically 160-180 BPM), heavy basslines, and complex drum patterns. Originating in the UK in the early 1990s, DnB evolved into subgenres like liquid DnB, neurofunk, jump-up, and jungle.
UK Rave Heritage
DnB emerged from UK rave culture, jungle, and breakbeat hardcore. Artists like Goldie, LTJ Bukem, Roni Size, and Andy C defined the genre’s early sound. The genre’s breakneck tempo and bass-heavy production made it a staple of UK club culture.
Subgenres & Diversity
- Liquid DnB: Smooth, melodic (Netsky, High Contrast, Calibre)
- Neurofunk: Dark, technical (Noisia, Black Sun Empire, Phace)
- Jump-up: Energetic, wobbling basslines (DJ Hazard, Original Sin)
- Jungle: Reggae-influenced, classic breakbeats (Congo Natty, Shy FX)
Festival & Mainstream Growth
DnB experienced a mainstream resurgence in the 2010s-2020s, with Pendulum’s reunion tours, Chase & Status’ pop crossovers, and Sub Focus’ festival sets. Hospitality Records and RAM Records championed the genre. TikTok introduced DnB to Gen Z via sped-up remixes.
