Origin

Photo of Kabosu, a Shiba Inu dog, taken by Japanese kindergarten teacher Atsuko Sato in February 2010. Posted to her blog, the image went viral on Tumblr in 2013 paired with broken English captions in Comic Sans MS.

Format

Internal monologue of the Shiba Inu expressed in intentionally broken English: “much wow,” “so amaze,” “very excite.” Rainbow Comic Sans text scattered around the dog’s face. The absurdist humor defined early 2010s meme culture.

Cultural Impact

Inspired Dogecoin cryptocurrency (December 2013), which reached $88 billion market cap in 2021. Kabosu became one of the most famous internet dogs ever. The “doge speak” linguistic pattern influenced internet communication.

Mainstream Adoption

Used in corporate marketing, news media, and even formal presentations. Elon Musk’s promotion of Dogecoin 2020-2021 brought the meme to financial news.

Legacy

Kabosu lived to age 18 (died 2024), cementing her status as internet royalty. Doge remains one of the most recognizable and enduring meme formats.
