#Draping

Draping is a makeup technique where blush is applied strategically to contour and lift the face, replacing traditional bronzer-based contouring. Popularized in the 1970s-80s, the technique experienced a 2016-2018 revival as the “Instagram contour” trend waned.

The Technique

Unlike traditional contouring (dark bronzer in hollows), draping uses:

  • Blush placement along cheekbones, temples, and nose bridge
  • Upward sweeping motions to lift facial features
  • Bright, warm tones (coral, pink, peach) instead of cool browns
  • Soft blending for a flushed, youthful glow

Historical Context

Draping originated with iconic makeup artists:

  • Way Bandy (1970s celebrity MUA, pioneered the technique)
  • Kevyn Aucoin (1990s, documented in “Making Faces”) The term “draping” referenced fabric draping principles—using color to sculpt dimension.

2016 Revival

As heavy Instagram contouring (Kim Kardashian’s brown stripes) fell out of favor, draping offered a softer alternative:

  • Glossier’s “Cloud Paint” (2017, cream blush in tubes)
  • Rare Beauty’s “Soft Pinch” (2020, liquid blush)
  • Charlotte Tilbury’s “Pillow Talk” (neutral-pink powder)

Modern Interpretation

2020s draping emphasizes:

  • Natural flush (one or two shades darker than skin)
  • Monochromatic looks (matching blush, lip, eye)
  • Cream formulas (easier blending than powder)
