Overview
#DronePhotography exploded 2015-2020 as DJI consumer drones (Phantom, Mavic series $500-2,000) democratized aerial perspectives previously requiring helicopters/planes. Instagram showcased overhead compositions (roads through forests, beaches from above, geometric patterns) creating entirely new visual vocabulary. Represented technological democratization enabling unique perspectives.
DJI Mavic Pro (2016, foldable $999) made drones portable travel companions. Aerial shots of Maldives overwater bungalows, Iceland landscapes, Norwegian fjords, urban geometry became Instagram signatures. “Dronestagram” account featured page launched creators.
Regulation backlash: National parks banned drones (wildlife disturbance), cities restricted urban flying (privacy, safety), FAA required registration (2015) then Remote Pilot Certificate (Part 107, 2016). Overtourism sites saw drone swarms, creating visual/noise pollution. By 2020, initial novelty waned as aerial perspectives normalized.
