The $500 hair styling tool that used aerodynamics to create curls without extreme heat, selling out globally for years.

The Coanda Effect

Launched October 2018 at $549, the Dyson Airwrap used the Coanda effect (airflow wrapping around surfaces) to style hair with air rather than damaging heat plates. Attachments included barrels that hair automatically wrapped around, smoothing brushes, and volumizing tools. Beauty influencers called it revolutionary. Dyson claimed it prevented heat damage while achieving salon results.

Cult Status and Scarcity

The Airwrap instantly sold out. Waitlists stretched for months. Resale markets saw $700-900 prices. Beauty YouTubers and Instagram influencers created thousands of tutorials. The device became aspirational: expensive, technologically sophisticated, and genuinely effective. Dyson restocked periodically but demand outpaced supply through 2019-2020.

Mainstream Adoption

By 2021, Airwrap became more available but remained premium-priced. The 2022 redesign ($599) added re-engineered attachments and improved airflow. Competitors (Shark FlexStyle, Revlon One-Step) created cheaper alternatives ($150-300), but Airwrap maintained luxury status. By 2023, it had generated over $1 billion in revenue, proving consumers would pay for hair care innovation.
